• Bring required materials daily: pencil, notebook or paper, and graphing calculator.
• Please respect other people and their belongings.
• Always use appropriate language.
• No food, gum, drinks, or headphones
You should be successful in this class if:
1. You're Here
2. You're not Late
3. You work on material from this class during class
Be Here
Absences
Speak with me outside of class or call a classmate to find out the information that you have missed if you are absent.
If you are aware you are going to be absent, I can get information before you leave.
If you are absent (for a legitimate reason) and miss a quiz, you can make up the quiz or test on the next school day (not the next day you are present). If you do not make it up on the next school day, you will make up those points on the corresponding chapter test – there are no make-up quizzes other than the next school day. The grade you receive on the corresponding chapter test will be adjusted and entered as your quiz grade (ex. If you receive an 80 out of 100 on a chapter test you will receive a 20 out of 25 on the quiz; both 80%)
You may miss two quizzes per semester. Any quiz missed after the second one will be recorded as a zero.
If you miss a test, you will need to take a quarter final to make up for those points.
You may miss one test per semester. Any test missed after the first one will be recorded as a zero.
To make things easier, just assume that we will have some kind of assessment (quiz or test) every Friday. In other words, try not to be absent on Fridays.
If we happen to have an assessment on another day, I will give you at least a week’s worth of notice. We can make other arrangements for a legitimate absence if necessary.
Don't Be Late
Tardies
It is important to be in class on time. You are tardy when you are not in the class when the bell rings. Any student who is tardy more than 30 minutes is absent for the period and must clear the absence with the attendance office the following day. Detention will be assigned after 3 tardies. Please refer to the school’s tardiness policy for additional information about 4 or more tardies.
How you'll earn points
Test/Quizzes
Chapter tests are approximately every three to four weeks and are announced in advance. They will be a mix of multiple choice and short-answer questions. They will be difficult. You should prepare.
· The point value of tests will range between 50 to 100 points.
· The point value of quizzes will range between 10 to 50 points.
· Quizzes and Test will be the only evaluation tool in this class (No Homework is counted).
Homework Policy
Homework is a very valuable tool for learning, however is will not be worth any points towards a grade. It is designed to help you practice for test or quizzes.
I will assignment homework, it is recommended that you do the homework, and we will go over the homework.
· You will not earn any points for homework
· The only way you will be able to take the quarter finals is if the corresponding homework for that quarter was complete and done on time at a 70% level
· Points will NOT be taken off for incomplete homework or homework that is not done
· Your grade will be solely based on test/quiz grades
At this point, you may be worried that your grade will suffer without getting homework points.
Let’s take a look at some quick calculations:
Let say that you have a possible 500 out of 600 or 83.3% on assessments.
If you scored perfect on homework, say 150 out of 150, your grade would now be 650 out of 750 or 86.6%
Now, let's start with the 500 out of 600 or 83.3% again.
This time, let’s take the optional quarter finals and earn 30 additional points on some assessments over the semester.
Your grade would now be 530 out of the same 600 or 88.3%
The only “catch” is that you must keep up with your homework for the corresponding quarter final.
Whether unfair or not, some students may be able to get a desirable grade without doing any homework
Grade Calculation
1) Quizzes and Tests: 80% of the semester grade.
2) Semester Exam: 20% of the semester grade.
